Concrete has an interesting history. Learn how the concrete we use today as Salem concrete contractors came to be.
As one of the top-ranked Salem concrete companies, it’s safe to say we know a thing about best practices in the concrete industry. We have found some of our customers like to learn more about concrete and cement, so we are going to share some of our knowledge in this post.
Firstly, concrete is made of of three distinct ingredients: water, aggregate, and Portland cement. Cement acts to bind the aggregate (usually sand and gravel) when mixed with water. Cement has existed in one form or another for over 12 million years. It was first discovered in a natural form, but mankind has developed stronger formulas through technical advances over the ages. Did you know cement-like materials were used in the building of the Great Wall of China?
The first Portland cement (akin to what we use today) was patented in 1843 by J. M. Mauder, Son & Co. In 1867, the concept of re-bar came to existence. Since then, people have built a 423m tall concrete building (Trump International Hotel & Tower). It is crazy how long concrete/cement has lasted and how it has improved with time. We’re very excited for the future of concrete, which it appears will be lighter and eco-friendlier than ever.
While we are a smaller Salem concrete company and we don’t build 423m tall concrete skyscrapers; we can lay a gorgeous and durable concrete driveway that can really add to your home or business’ curb appeal.
